Social composition of the ethnic groups

The household, led by the fathers in the houses (except by the mothers in the matrilineal Kunama) is the basic unit of the social compositions of all the ethnic groups of Eritrea. A number of households claiming the same paternal or maternal (in the Kunamas) ancestor constitute a lineage. Different lineages which in turn claim a common distant ancestor form villages. Beyond the village level, the higher level of grouping is the clan (tribe) whose lineage groups are usually scattered in different villages. It is common to hear people claiming that lineage groups of the same clan as theirs migrated and continue to live in distant villages or even regions. With the advent of the Italians, different clans of the same common ancestry which live in proximity to each other were organized to constitute a district. Different districts merged together along geo-climatic lines
